Monday morning came around and Marco drove down to the Metro Headquarters for their weekly Cold Case Unit meeting. He had cut his driving gig off early so he could get a little sleep. Business was slow anyway, he thought. So, why just fight for scraps with the other drivers?

Before the meeting, Jane pulled Marco aside into some lieutenant’s office.

“What’s up?” Marco asked.

She shook her head. “I got pulled into the sheriff’s office this morning. He was concerned about the make-up of our cold case unit.”

“Me in particular,” Marco provided.

“I think he thought the civilian consultants would be mostly advisors,” Jane said. “You know. Provide direction that was unconventional. Fresh eyes.”

“What are you saying? You want me to quit? Or are you going to fire me?”

“Neither. We’re all trying to find our way here.”

She was trying to soft-pedal, he knew. Perhaps the sheriff had actually pulled back harder on the reigns, but she was softening the blow for Marco’s benefit.

“How do other units across America deal with their civilian members?” he asked.

Jane pointed at Marco and said, “Good point. I’ll make some phone calls this afternoon to find out.”

“Maybe the good Sheriff would like me to be more like the silent partner type. Like Professor Grabass.”

“The professor is providing background information on many of those we’ve met recently,” Jane said in the professor’s defense.

“How are the other teams doing?” Marco asked.

“Let’s go find out.”

Getting down to the meeting room, Jane and Marco were the last to arrive. They took the last two seats and Jane opened the meeting. Then she asked for an update from the other cold case teams.

Detective Stan Davis opened up by saying, “First of all, let me introduce a new member to our team. This is Susie Quinn, our intern and a junior in criminal justice at the university.”

Susie was perhaps a hundred pounds soaking wet, with glasses thick enough to see the moon close up. Marco thought she looked about twelve. The room grumbled their thanks for her being there. Professor Grabass put his hand on her back as a comforting gesture.

Jane said, “Susie will be working with each of the three teams as needed.”

Then Stan explained where they were on their current cold case. He had to admit they weren’t very far at all. He was working with one of the older, retired detectives.

“We’re running into a lot of obstacles,” Stan explained. “Half of those who had been interviewed back in the day can’t be found now.”

Detective Brian Nelson, the big linebacker type who had suffered a head injury in the line of duty, said, “We’ve had similar problems. Those who we could contact seem to have memory loss. Hey, I can relate.”

Brian’s partner, the other retired detective, nodded agreement.

“Needless to say,” the smaller man, Stan, said, “We haven’t gotten too far yet.”

Jane nodded understanding. Then she focused on the young intern and asked, “How are you on social media?”

The young lady cleared her throat and then said, “I’m on most of the platforms.”

“Perhaps you could work that angle with all of our three teams,” Jane said.
